With dramatic mountains, alluring lakes and sweeping landscapes New Zealand, situated in the South Pacific 1600 kilometres east of Australia, is renowned for its remarkable beauty and relaxing nature. Fully encircled by spectacular coastline, the country’s pristine beaches, lush pastoral land and dense verdant forests give rise to the quintessential ‘clean, green’ brand that is associated with New Zealand worldwide. The north is sub-tropical while majestic alps, gouged by glaciers, tower in the south.
The country’s 268,021 square kilometre land mass encompasses three main islands – the long and narrow North and South islands and tiny Stewart Island off the southern tip. There are a large number of smaller off-shore islands. The distance from top to toe is 1,700 kilometres. Slightly smaller than Italy but with almost double its length of coastline, New Zealand and its uncluttered lifestyle is the envy of many nations. A temperate climate and sparsely populated geography make our homeland a marvelous place for us to live and a fascinating country for our guests to visit.
We have a small population - just four million people – with almost 60 percent of those living in major metropolitan cities. New Zealand’s indigenous race, Maori, make up 14 percent of the population. The majority, around 80 percent, are of European heritage. However, the arrival of new immigrants of many nationalities and ethnic backgrounds has, in more recent times, introduced wider cultural diversity to our cities, towns and communities. The eclectic mix of local and ethnic food, art, theatre and events, hearty rural towns and sophisticated cities makes New Zealand a vibrant, ‘go-ahead’ country.
English is the main language and our education system and levels of qualification are similar to Western Europe. With a stable parliamentary democracy, low inflation and high employment, New Zealand has a strongly performing economy. Although our economic base has been predominantly agricultural, New Zealand has always been a country of inventors and innovators. A number of the world’s momentous discoveries in science, technology and medicine have been made by New Zealanders. We are adventurous people – we love to travel and explore. We’re addicted to the ‘great outdoors’ and sport is a national passion.
The quality and flavour of our home-grown produce is second to none, so the Dunninghams brand is right at home. As New Zealand’s largest nationwide butchery supplies company we have a nationwide sales force. The butchery trade we support has been greatly transformed over the last 30 years with the rise of major retail chains leading to the demise of local butcheries. Two major groups (Foodstuffs and Woolworths Australia) hold 95 percent of the supermarket share. Retail Meat New Zealand is the main industry body.
The changing nature of the industry is just another of the challenges that add zest to doing business. It’s what drives Dunninghams in our quest to provide a fresh, comprehensive and innovative range of local and international products to meet all tastes and needs across our diversified market.
